The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

I am always looking for an edge in treating pain and stress. Energy work is a field I’m VERY excited to step into now that there is both compelling research and science behind it! This work is still not mainstream nor even accepted by some other medical traditionalists, but heck, neither was hippotherapy when I started doing that 25 years ago … so when did the ‘opinions’ of others ever stop me from offering cutting edge therapy that works!

“There are over 400 identified forms of psychotherapy, most of which have little or no research to validate them. Energy psychology is both evidence-based and in the top 10% in terms of published research for psychotherapy modalities.”

But I admit, energy healing has a mystique about it. Some believe it’s evil, others see the good. It’s hard to wrap our minds around the fact that physics now shows us that energy can have an effect over both time and distance. In the past that type of thinking would be considered a sort of witchcraft. But, so would cell phones … seriously consider what someone in the 1800’s would think of someone talking to someone else thousands of miles away on a little wireless box … it would have been judged as sorcery.

So what is good and what is evil? Energy actually comes from the laws of God’s creation, so it is good. Everything God created was originally good. Energy in and of itself is a good given to us by God but in practice energy can be used in good ways or in evil ways. Nuclear technology can be used to energize a city or to bomb a city. How energy is used can be for good or for evil. Distance work using energy healing is a possibility derived from science. But distance energy work can take the form of cursing, hexes, vexes or it can take the form of healing, blessing, praying … energy can be twisted and distorted into evil or it can be used as God intended for good.

Because I believe energy is the creation of God but that it can be used for good or for evil, I propose there are ethical considerations in practicing this type of healing with others:

  1. Energy work should be used for the highest good of the person involved.
  2. Energy work should be used with permission of the other person, respecting their free will.
  3. Those who use energy techniques should respect God’s word in the bible where He forbids communication with the dead, foretelling future events, or consulting with demons as a means to have power over others or to discover knowledge of the occult.
  4. And we need to be very cautious about making an idol out of those who use energy healing or worshiping ‘energy healing,’ but rather we worship the God who is the source of all healing, the Creator of the laws of nature.

Medicine and healing are always changing, advancing. Medical ethics are important guidelines as we move forward to promote the good and avoid the bad and the ugly. I’m committed to following the four statements listed above. What do you think? Are there any points I should add? Any comments? I’d love to hear from you! I’m committed to bringing more ‘good’ into the world and I’m committed to being a faithful catholic christian.
